A dull London pawnbroker answers a newspaper advertisement from a society that exists, apparently, only to pay red-haired men four pounds a week. The work is to sit in a rented room copying out the encyclopedia by hand, and on no account to leave the building. He does this happily for two months — and then one morning finds a card on the locked door.
