Chapter 1

A Visitor with Red Hair

One day last autumn I called on mi amigo Sherlock Holmes. Lo encontré hablando con un caballero mayor: very fat, red-faced, and with fiery pelo rojo.

Señor Wilson, this gentleman has been my partner and mi ayudante in many of my most successful casos, and I have no doubt that he will be just as useful to me in yours.”

He gave a quick, questioning look from unos ojos pequeños buried in flesh.

Pruebe el sofá,” dijo Holmes. Se dejó caer en su sillón y juntó las yemas de los dedos, the way he always did when he was weighing something up. You have shown it by el entusiasmo with which you write up my little aventuras. And, if you will forgive me for saying so, by the way you dress them up a little.”

Tus casos siempre me han interesado muchísimo,” dije yo.

Recordarás lo que dije el otro día, just before we took on that very simple little problema of Miss Mary Sutherland. For strange effects and extraordinary combinaciones, I said, hay que ir a la vida misma.

“You did, Doctor. Aun así, al final estarás de acuerdo conmigo, because otherwise I shall go on piling fact upon fact until your reason gives way and admits that I am right. He has begun una historia that promises to be one of las más extrañas I have heard in mucho tiempo. You have heard me say that the oddest things are very often tied not to los grandes crímenes but to los pequeños, and sometimes to casos where it is not even clear that un crimen has been committed at all. From what I have heard so far, I cannot tell you whether this is un crimen or not.

Perhaps, Señor Wilson, you would be good enough to start su historia again. Esta vez I have to admit that los hechos are, as far as I know, únicos.”

He pulled a dirty, crumpled periódico out of the inside pocket of su abrigo. I took a good look at him and tried, in my friend’s manner, to read whatever su ropa and su aspecto might have to tell.

I did not get much out of it. Nuestro visitante looked like an ordinary British shopkeeper and nothing more: gordo, pomposo y lento. Llevaba pantalones grises muy anchos, de cuadros, una chaqueta negra that was not very clean and hung open at the front, and a dull waistcoat with a heavy brass watch-chain across it, with a square piece of pierced metal swinging from the chain as an ornament. Un sombrero gastado and un abrigo marrón with a creased velvet collar lay on una silla beside him. Look as I might, no había nada notable en el hombre, except for his blazing cabeza roja and la expresión amarga y ofendida on su cara.

Holmes saw at once what I was doing. Sacudió la cabeza con una sonrisa as he caught my questioning glances. “Aparte de los hechos obvios that he has done trabajo manual at some time, that he takes snuff, that he is a Freemason, that he has been in China, and that he has done a great deal of writing lately, no puedo deducir nada más.”

El señor Jabez Wilson sat up sharply in su silla, his forefinger still on el papel, los ojos on mi amigo.

It is as true as gospel. Empecé como carpintero de barco.”

Sus manos, my dear sir.

No voy a insultar su inteligencia by explaining that, especially as you wear an arc-and-compass pin, which is rather against the strict rules of su orden.”

Ah, claro. Lo olvidé. But the writing?”

“What else can that right cuff mean, so shiny for five inches, and the left one with the smooth patch near el codo where usted lo apoya en la mesa?”

¿Y China?

El pez tatuado just above your right wrist could only have been done in China. I have made a small study of tatuajes and have even written on el tema. And when I see una moneda de China hanging from your watch-chain as well, la cosa se vuelve aún más sencilla.”

El señor Jabez Wilson laughed heavily, una gran risa that shook him all over. “¡Vaya!dijo.

‘Omne ignotum pro magnifico,’ you know. Mi pobre reputación, such as it is, will sink like a stone if I am so honest.

All red-headed men who are sound in body and mind, and above the age of twenty-one years, are eligible. Apply in person on Monday, at eleven o’clock, to Duncan Ross, at las oficinas de la Liga, 7 Pope’s Court, Fleet Street.”

¿Qué diablos significa esto?” I burst out, after I had read el extraordinario anuncio through twice.

Holmes chuckled and wriggled about in su sillón, as he always did when he was in high spirits. Empiece por el principio and tell us all about yourself, su casa, and what este anuncio did to su fortuna.

“It is The Morning Chronicle of April 27, 1890. Hace solo dos meses.

Muy bien. ¿Ahora, señor Wilson?

“Well, it is just as I was telling you, Señor Sherlock Holmes,” dijo Jabez Wilson, secándose la frente. No es un gran negocio, and estos últimos años mine has done no more than keep me fed. Antes podía pagar a dos ayudantes. Ahora solo tengo uno, and I would have trouble paying even him, except that he is willing to come for half wages para aprender el oficio.”

But if he is satisfied, why should I put ideas in su cabeza?”

“Why indeed? Parece usted muy afortunado to have an employé who comes for less than el precio del mercado. That is not a common thing among employers en estos tiempos. I am beginning to think that su ayudante may be quite as remarkable as su anuncio.”

“Oh, he has sus defectos too,” dijo el señor Wilson. Then he dives down into el sótano like a rabbit into its hole para revelar sus fotos. Ese es su gran defecto, but on the whole he is a good trabajador. There is no harm in him.”

¿Sigue con usted, supongo?

Sí, señor. He and una chica de catorce años, que cocina un poco y mantiene limpia la casa—that is all I have in la casa, for soy viudo and never had any familia. Los tres vivimos muy tranquilos, sir. Mantenemos un techo sobre nuestras cabezas y pagamos nuestras deudas, and that is about as far as it goes.
