Chapter 1

The Coming of the Ship

Almustafa, el elegido y el amado, who was a dawn to his own day, had waited doce años in the city of Orphalese for su barco. It was to come back and carry him home to la isla where he was born.

And in the twelfth year, on the seventh day of Ielool, el mes de la cosecha, he climbed la colina outside the city walls y miró hacia el mar. And he saw su barco coming with la niebla, grey and soft on the water.

Then las puertas de su corazón were flung open, and his joy flew far out over el mar. And he closed sus ojos and prayed in los silencios de su alma.

But as he came down la colina, una tristeza came over him, y pensó en su corazón:

¿Cómo puedo irme en paz y sin dolor? No, no puedo dejar esta ciudad without a wound in mi espíritu.

Long were los días de dolor I have spent inside its walls, y largas fueron las noches de soledad.

He dejado demasiados pedazos de mi espíritu in estas calles, and too many are los hijos de mi deseo who walk naked among estas colinas. I cannot pull away from them without a weight and an ache.

No es un abrigo lo que me quito hoy, but a skin that I tear with mis propias manos.

And it is not un pensamiento I leave behind me, but un corazón made sweet with hunger and with thirst.

I would gladly take with me todo lo que hay aquí. But how can I?

A voice cannot carry la lengua y los labios that gave it wings. Sola debe buscar el cielo, high and far above.

Now when he reached the foot of la colina, he turned again towards el mar, and he saw su barco coming into el puerto, and on her prow los marineros, the men of his own land.

Y su alma les gritó, y dijo:

Hijos de mi madre antigua, you riders of the tides,

¡Cuántas veces habéis navegado en mis sueños! And now you come while I am awake, y ese es mi sueño más profundo.

Estoy listo para partir. My eagerness stands with its sails full set, waiting for el viento.

Solo un aliento más en este aire quieto, only one more loving look behind me,

And then I will stand among you, un marinero entre marineros.

Only one more bend will this stream make, solo un murmullo más en este claro,

And then I will come to you, una gota sin límites en un océano sin límites.

And as he walked he saw, far off, hombres y mujeres leaving their fields and their vineyards y corriendo hacia las puertas de la ciudad.

And he heard sus voces calling his name, shouting from field to field, diciéndose unos a otros que su barco había llegado.

And what can I give al hombre who has left his plough in the middle of the furrow, or al hombre who has stopped the wheel of his winepress?

¿Se volverá mi corazón un árbol cargado de fruta, so that I can gather it and give it to them?

¿Y correrán mis deseos como una fuente, so that I can fill sus copas?

Or una flauta, for his breath to pass through?

Soy un buscador de silencios. And what treasure have I found in los silencios that I can hand out with confidence?

Si este es mi día de la cosecha, in what fields did I sow the seed, and in what forgotten seasons?

If this really is the hour when I lift up mi lámpara, no es mi llama la que arderá dentro.

These things he said in words. For he himself could not speak his deeper secret.

And when he entered la ciudad todo el pueblo came out to meet him, and they cried out to him as with one voice.

No te vayas todavía.

Has sido el mediodía en nuestro crepúsculo, and tu juventud has given us dreams to dream.

No eres un extraño entre nosotros, ni un invitado, but nuestro hijo and our dearly beloved.

Do not let nuestros ojos hunger for tu cara yet.

And the priests and the priestesses le dijeron:

No dejes que las olas del mar nos separen ahora, and do not let los años you spent among us become un recuerdo.

Has caminado entre nosotros como un espíritu, and tu sombra has been una luz upon nuestras caras.

Te hemos amado mucho. But nuestro amor was speechless, y ha estado escondido detrás de velos.

Pero ahora grita hacia ti, and it would stand uncovered before you.

And it has always been so: el amor no conoce su propia profundidad until the hour of parting.

And others came too and begged him. Pero él no les respondió. He only bent la cabeza, and those who stood near saw sus lágrimas falling on su pecho.

And he and el pueblo walked on towards the great square in front of el templo.

And she was a seer.

And he looked at her con gran ternura, for she was the first who had sought him out and believed in him, when he had been only un día in su ciudad.

Y ella le saludó, y dijo:

Profeta de Dios, in search of the farthest thing, for a long time you have searched las distancias for tu barco.

And now tu barco ha llegado, and you must go.

Profundo es tu deseo por la tierra de tus recuerdos and the home of tus mayores deseos. And nuestro amor would not tie you down, nor would our needs hold you back.

Pero esto te pedimos antes de irte: habla con nosotros, and give us tu verdad.

Y se la daremos a nuestros hijos, and they to sus hijos, and it will not die.

In your loneliness you have kept watch over nuestros días, and in your waking hours you have listened to el llanto y la risa of our sleep.

So now show us to ourselves, y dinos todo lo que se te ha mostrado of what lies between el nacimiento y la muerte.

Y él respondió,

Pueblo de Orphalese, of what can I speak but of lo que ahora mismo se mueve dentro de vuestras almas?
