Laying Plans

Sun Tzu said: El arte de la guerra es de la mayor importancia para el estado.

Es cuestión de vida o muerte. It is el camino to safety or to ruin. So it is a subject that must never be ignored.

The art of war is ruled by cinco factores that never change. Weigh them when you are working out the conditions in the field.

These are: (1) El Camino; (2) El Cielo; (3) La Tierra; (4) El Comandante; (5) El método y la disciplina.

El Camino makes el pueblo think as one with their ruler. Lo seguirán hasta la muerte, and no danger will frighten them.

El Cielo significa la noche y el día, el frío y el calor, los tiempos y las estaciones del año.

La Tierra means distances, long and short; el peligro and safety; el terreno abierto and narrow passes; the chances of life and death.

El Comandante stands for wisdom, honesty, kindness, el valor and strictness.

El método y la disciplina mean dividing el ejército into its proper units, ranking los oficiales by grade, keeping open the roads that carry supplies to los soldados, and controlling what the army spends.

Todo general debe conocer estas cinco cosas. The one who knows them will win; the one who does not know them will fail.

So when you are weighing up the military conditions, úsalas como base de una comparación, like this:

(1) Which of the two rulers has el Camino on his side? (2) ¿Cuál de los dos generales tiene más habilidad? (3) Which side has el Cielo and la Tierra a su favor? (4) ¿Qué bando mantiene mejor la disciplina? (5) ¿Cuál de los dos ejércitos es más fuerte? (6) ¿Qué bando tiene mejores oficiales y soldados? (7) Which of the two armies is more consistent in reward and punishment?

From these seven questions I can forecast la victoria or la derrota.

El general que escucha mi consejo y actúa según él, vencerá. Keep that man in command! El general que no escucha mi consejo y no actúa según él, será derrotado. Dismiss that man!

Take la ventaja that my advice gives you, but also use any helpful circumstance that falls outside the ordinary rules.

As circumstances turn in your favour, cambia tus planes to match.

Toda la guerra se basa en el engaño.

So when we can attack, we must seem unable; when we move nuestras fuerzas, we must seem still; cuando estamos cerca, el enemigo debe creer que estamos lejos; cuando estamos lejos, debe creer que estamos cerca.

Hold out bait to draw el enemigo in. Finge desorden, and crush him.

Si es fuerte en todos los puntos, prepárate para él. If he is más fuerte than you, keep away from him.

If el enemigo has a hot temper, work to make him angry. Pretend to be weak, so that he grows proud.

Si descansa, no le des descanso. If sus fuerzas are together, split them up.

Attack him where he is unprepared, aparece donde no te esperan.
