Chapter 1
The Witches’ Promise
When Duncan the Meek was king of Scotland, there lived a great lord. Tenía coraje, and great skill in war. Lo había demostrado hacía poco, beating un ejército de rebeldes that una gran fuerza of Norwegian troops had come to help.
The two Scottish generals, Macbeth and Banquo, were riding home from la gran batalla. Their road took them across a bare, blasted heath. Y allí los detuvieron tres figuras extrañas, stranger than anything they had ever seen. Parecían mujeres, except that they had beards. Tenían la piel seca y arrugada, their clothes were wild, y nada en ellas parecía de este mundo.
Macbeth les habló primero. Parecieron ofenderse. Then the first of them greeted him with el título of lord of Glamis.
It was startling enough to be known at all by tales criaturas. Fue mucho más extraño when the second followed with el título of lord of Cawdor, un título he had no claim to whatever. And then the third: “All hail! King that shall be hereafter!”
Un saludo así bien podía asombrarlo. While the king had sons alive, el trono could never come to him, and he knew it.
Then they turned to Banquo, and what they told him came out in riddles. Menor que Macbeth, y más grande. No tan feliz, pero mucho más feliz. Él nunca reinaría, they said, but his sons after him would be kings in Scotland.
Entonces se volvieron aire y desaparecieron. That was how the two men knew what they had met: the weird sisters, las brujas.
They came with his authority to give Macbeth the title of lord of Cawdor.
Encajaba con la profecía de las brujas so exactly that it seemed un milagro. Macbeth stood wrapped in amazement, sin poder responder a los mensajeros. And while he stood there, una esperanza empezó a crecer dentro de él. Perhaps las palabras de la tercera bruja would come true in the same way. Perhaps un día él también sería rey. King of Scotland.
He turned to Banquo. “¿No esperas tú que tus hijos sean reyes? Lo que las brujas me prometieron has come true in the most wonderful way.”
“That hope,” Banquo answered, “podría llevarte a buscar el trono. Pero estos poderes de la oscuridad muchas veces nos dicen la verdad en cosas pequeñas, only to betray us in the greatest.”
But the wicked words of las brujas had sunk too deep into la mente de Macbeth for him to listen to a warning, even from good Banquo. Desde aquel día, todos sus pensamientos iban a una sola cosa: how to win el trono of Scotland.
Macbeth had a wife, and he told her all of it: the strange prophecy of the weird sisters, y la parte que ya se había cumplido. Macbeth held back, for the thought of blood still troubled him, y ella lo empujaba.
Le gustaba visitar de vez en cuando a sus principales señores, and to be gracious to them when he did. He brought sus dos hijos, Malcolm and Donalbain, and una larga fila of lords and attendants with him, all the more honour to Macbeth for las grandes victorias he had won.
You could tell as much from los nidos. The golondrina had built under every jutting ledge and stone corner of the building, wherever it could find a good place; and where those pájaros settle and breed, people say, el aire is always fine. El rey entró muy contento con el sitio, and just as pleased with the care and respect of his honoured hostess, lady Macbeth.
He had been unusually pleased with his welcome, and before he went up he had given presents to sus principales oficiales. To lady Macbeth he sent un diamante precioso, greeting her by the name of his most kind hostess.
She woke to plan el asesinato del rey.
She would never have taken such a deed upon herself, but she was afraid of la naturaleza de su marido. It was too full of the milk of human kindness for un asesinato planeado. Él tenía ambición, ella lo sabía, pero también tenía conciencia, and he was not yet ready for el crimen that great ambition usually ends in. She was afraid of one thing: that la blandura que había en él, for he was a kinder man than she was, would come between at the last moment and ruin everything.
There lay Duncan, profundamente dormido after el largo viaje. Ella lo miró de cerca. There was something in his face as he slept that was like the face of her own father, and she could not do it.
She went back to talk to su marido.
And he had been his host that day: por las leyes de la hospitalidad, su deber era cerrar la puerta a los asesinos del rey, not to carry the knife himself. Bueno con sus señores, and to Macbeth most of all. Los reyes así are Heaven’s own special care, and their subjects are doubly bound to avenge them. And besides, the king had raised Macbeth high en la opinión de todos. What would all those honours be worth, once the word asesinato was attached to them?
But she was not una mujer to be shaken off un propósito malvado. Reason after reason why he must not draw back from what he had begun: qué fácil era, qué pronto acabaría todo, cómo el trabajo de una sola noche les daría el trono, and royal power over all their nights and days to come.
Ella había criado a un niño, she said. Sabía muy bien lo dulce que era. And she would have taken that bebé while it smiled up into her face, torn it away, and dashed its brains out, if she had sworn to do it as he had sworn to do this. Y no había peligro, añadió: they could lay the whole guilt of the deed on los dos criados, drunken and sleepy.
She lashed his slow resolve so hard, and with such courage in her tongue, that él volvió a encontrar su coraje para el trabajo sangriento.
Así que Macbeth cogió la daga en la mano and stole softly through the dark to la habitación donde dormía Duncan. And as he went, creyó ver otra daga en el aire in front of him, the handle turned towards his hand, y gotas de sangre en la hoja y en la punta. Macbeth alargó la mano para cogerla. No había nada allí. Era aire. A thing made by his own hot, crowded brain and the business he had come to do.
One of them said, “¡Que Dios nos bendiga!” and the other answered, “Amen,” y se acomodaron para dormir otra vez. Macbeth stood listening to them. When the man said “¡Que Dios nos bendiga!” he tried to say “Amen” with him. La palabra se le quedó en la garganta, and he could not get it out.
Macbeth does murder sleep, the innocent sleep, that keeps life going.” Glamis ha asesinado el sueño, and therefore Cawdor shall sleep no more. Macbeth shall sleep no more.”
Ella había estado escuchando, and had begun to think he had failed, que algo había salido mal. He came in so wild and distracted that she turned on him for having no firmness in him. Lo mandó a lavarse la sangre de las manos, and she took la daga from him: ella misma would stain the cheeks of los criados with blood, and make the guilt look like theirs.
