Chapter 1
My First Pond
Nunca me canso de mirar un estanque. Unos pocos palmos de agua tranquila, and what a busy life there is in ese mundo verde! On el barro caliente de la orilla, the Frog’s little Tadpoles lie in el sol and dart about in sus multitudes negras. Down in el agua, the orange-bellied Newt steers slowly along. Among the reeds sit las pequeñas flotas of the Caddis-worms, medio fuera de sus tubos. Un tubo is sometimes a tiny bit of stick, sometimes una torre de conchas pequeñas.
En las partes profundas the Water-beetle dives, and he takes su aire de repuesto with him: una burbuja at the tip of his wing-cases, and under his chest una capa de gas que brilla como una coraza de plata. Up on la superficie the Whirligigs turn and twist. Brillan como pequeñas perlas en un baile. Close by swims un grupo of Pond-skaters. Se deslizan sobre el agua con brazadas de lado, like a cobbler pulling his thread when he sews.
Here are the Water-boatmen. Y aquí están the flat Water-scorpions. Here too, cubierto de barro, is the grub of our largest Dragon-fly. Se mueve de una manera muy extraña. Su parte de atrás es un embudo ancho: it fills the funnel with agua, echa el agua fuera otra vez, and shoots forward just as far as the kick of su pequeño cañón de agua will carry it.
There are plenty of peaceful shelled creatures too. En el fondo, los Caracoles de río, gordos, levantan la tapa con cuidado and open the shutters of their house just a crack. Up at la superficie, in the open spaces of el jardín de agua, the Pond-snails take el aire. Dark Leeches twist over their prey, a piece of Earthworm. And thousands of pequeñas larvas rojizas, los mosquitos del futuro, giran y se curvan por el agua like delfines elegantes.
Una charca tranquila, only a few feet wide, calentada por el sol, is un mundo enorme. Es una maravilla para cualquier niño who grows tired of his paper boat and starts watching what is happening in el agua instead. Let me tell you what I remember of mi primer estanque. Lo exploré cuando tenía siete años.
We had nothing but la pequeña casa my mother had inherited, and its patch of jardín. Nuestro dinero was almost gone. ¿Qué podíamos hacer? Esa era la pregunta that mi padre y mi madre sat talking over una noche.
¿Te acuerdas de Hop-o’-My-Thumb, who hid under the woodcutter’s stool and listened to his poor parents? But what I heard was not a frightening plan.
Henri could look after them and take them down to el arroyo. Y podríamos darles la grasa de la fábrica de sebo. They say it is excellent for los patos, and we could buy it cheaply.”
“Muy bien,” says mi padre. “Vamos a criar patos. Puede haber problemas, but we’ll give it a try.”
Esa noche soñé con el paraíso. I was with mis patitos in sus trajes amarillos. Los llevaba al estanque, I watched them have their bath, and los traía a casa otra vez, carrying the tired ones in una cesta.
A month or two later the little birds of mi sueño were real. There were twenty-four of them. Dos gallinas had hatched them: one was la gran gallina negra who lived in la casa, y la otra era prestada de un vecino.
La gran gallina negra is enough to bring them all up, she takes such care of su familia adoptada. Al principio todo va perfectamente. Una tina with two fingers’ depth of agua in it serves as un estanque, and en los días de sol los patitos se bañan en ella under the anxious eye of la gallina.
Two weeks later la tina is no longer enough. No hay berros llenos de pequeños moluscos, and no Worms or Tadpoles either, and both of those are a treat. And for us el día de los problemas has come too. We live right at the top of la colina. How are we to find enough agua for un estanque for nuestros patitos? ¡En verano apenas tenemos agua para beber!
Near la casa there is only una fuente pequeña, and four or five families besides ours draw their agua there en cubos de cobre. Cuando el burro del maestro ha bebido bastante and los vecinos have taken what they need for el día, the basin of la fuente is dry. Then we have to wait veinticuatro horas for it to fill again.
There is un arroyo at the foot of la colina, but es peligroso to take una tropa de patitos down to it. En el camino por el pueblo we might meet gatos asesinos, or un perro con mal genio might frighten la pequeña banda and scatter it, y luego sería muy difícil recogerlos a todos otra vez. But there is another place, halfway up la colina, with un prado of hierba verde and un estanque of a good size. Es muy tranquilo there, and you can reach it by un sendero desierto. Los patitos will do well there.
What a day that was, mi primer día as pastor de patos! ¿Por qué tiene que haber siempre algo to spoil such joys? Caminar sobre las piedras duras had given me una ampolla grande on mi talón, and it hurt. Even if I had wanted to put on los zapatos kept in the cupboard for los domingos and holidays, I could not have.
They limped, and they quacked de cansancio. Se habrían negado a seguir hacia el estanque if I had not stopped now and then to rest them a la sombra de un fresno.
Ya estamos allí. El sitio no podría ser mejor para mis pajarillos: el agua is shallow and warm, with a few mounds of barro and pequeñas islas verdes. El placer del baño begins at once. Los patitos clap sus picos. Buscan aquí, allí y en todas partes. Cuelan cada bocado, spitting out el agua clara and swallowing the good bits. In the deeper parts they point sus colas at el cielo and put their heads under el agua. Son felices, and it is a lovely thing to watch them at work. Yo también disfruto del estanque.
¿Qué es esto? On el barro lie some loose, knotted cords, negros como el hollín. You might take them for hilos de lana pulled out of an old unravelling stocking. Quizá una pastora estaba tejiendo un calcetín negro, saw that her work was going badly, empezó otra vez desde el principio, and threw the old lana down en su impaciencia with all its dropped stitches.
Es pegajoso and very slack, and se me escapa entre los dedos before they can take hold of it. Algunos de los nudos se rompen and let out what is inside. Out comes una bola negra, the size of la cabeza de un alfiler, with una cola plana behind it. I know that shape, though I have never seen it so tiny: it is a Tadpole, el bebé de la rana.
Here are otros insectos. Giran sobre la superficie del agua and sus espaldas negras shine in el sol. En cuanto levanto la mano to catch them, desaparecen, y no sé adónde van. Qué lástima. I would have loved to see them closer, and to watch them wriggle in un pequeño cuenco I would have kept ready for them.
Let us look at el fondo del agua, pushing aside those bunches of hilo verde with their beads of aire rising and gathering into foam. Hay un poco de todo ahí abajo. Veo conchas bonitas with tight coils, planas como judías. Veo pequeños gusanos carrying tufts and feathers. I make out others with soft fins flapping all the time on sus espaldas. ¿Qué hacen todos ahí? ¿Cómo se llaman? No lo sé. And I stare at them mucho tiempo, held by el misterio del agua.
Where el estanque trickles out into el campo de al lado, there are some alder trees, and there I make un descubrimiento glorioso. It is un escarabajo, and not a big one, oh no. Es más pequeño que un hueso de cereza, but he is un azul I have no words for. Los ángeles del cielo must wear dresses of ese azul. Meto el escarabajo inside una concha de caracol vacía and plug it with una hoja. I shall admire that living jewel at my leisure cuando llegue a casa. Otras cosas me llaman.
La fuente that feeds el estanque trickles out of la roca, fría y clara. El agua gathers first in una pequeña copa the size of two cupped hands, and then corre en un arroyo. Una caída de agua así pide un molino, of course — something to turn round and round. Construyo uno con dos trozos de paja crossed on an axle, held up by piedras planas set on edge. El molino es un gran éxito. I am only sorry that I have nobody but los patitos to admire it.
And then, while I am gathering my blocks, me olvido por completo de la presa I meant to build.
On one of las piedras rotas there is a hole big enough to put mi puño into, and something in it is shining como el cristal. El hueco is lined with caras pequeñas y planas, gathered in sixes, que destellan y brillan al sol. He visto algo así en la iglesia on the great saints’ days, when la luz de las velas in the big chandelier lights up the stars in its hanging crystal.
En verano we children lie on the straw of the threshing-floor and nos contamos historias sobre el tesoro that un dragón guards underground. Ese tesoro comes back to me now. By breaking una piedra, have I found the same thing that shines, very small, in el anillo de mi madre, only far richer?
Me da tantos diamantes that soon I have un montón de piedras rotas sparkling with racimos magníficos. And he does more: me da su oro. The trickle of agua from la roca falls on un lecho de arena fina y lo revuelve en burbujas. If I bend over towards la luz, I can see something like limaduras de oro whirling where el agua strikes el fondo. Is this really the famous metal that twenty-franc pieces are made of, the coins we so rarely see at home? Por el brillo, eso parece.
Cojo una pizca de arena and put it in la palma de mi mano. There are plenty of puntos brillantes, but son tan pequeños that I have to lift them with una paja mojada en mi boca. Dejémoslo: they are too tiny and too much trouble to collect. Los trozos grandes y valiosos must be farther in, deep inside la roca. Volveremos más tarde. Haremos volar la montaña.
Rompo más piedras. Oh, qué cosa tan extraña has just come loose, todo de una pieza! Está enroscada en una espiral, like los caracoles planos that come out of the cracks of old walls cuando llueve. With its knotted ridges it looks like a little ram’s horn.
Treasures and curiosities have made mis bolsillos bulge with piedras. Es tarde, and los patitos have eaten all they want. “Venid, pequeños,” I say to them. “Vamos a casa.”
I think about all the wonderful things I have found. But una triste decepción is waiting for me en casa. Mis padres catch sight of mis bolsillos, bulging with their shameful load of piedras. La tela has given way under the rough, heavy weight.
“¡Bribón!” says mi padre when he sees the damage. “Te mando a cuidar los patos and you amuse yourself picking up piedras, como si no hubiera bastantes alrededor de la casa! ¡Date prisa y tíralas!”
Con el corazón roto, I obey. Diamantes, gold dust, stone ram’s horn, el escarabajo del cielo — all of them go onto the rubbish heap outside la puerta.
“Qué cosa, raising children only to see them turn out so badly! You will put me in mi tumba. Green stuff I don’t mind: sirve para los conejos. But piedras, which ruin tus bolsillos, and poisonous creatures, which will sting tu mano: ¿de qué te sirven, tonto? No hay duda. ¡Alguien te ha echado un hechizo!”
¡Pobre madre! Tenía razón. Un hechizo had been put on me — un hechizo tejido por la Naturaleza misma. Years later I found out that los diamantes of the duck pond were cristal de roca, and the gold dust was mica. It was full of secretos worth more to me than diamantes u oro.
El estanque de cristal
¿Has tenido alguna vez un estanque indoors? Es fácil de hacer, and you can watch la vida del agua in it even better than you can outside, where los estanques are too big and hold too much. Fuera, además, la gente pasa and disturbs you.
For mi estanque indoors, el herrero made me un marco de barras de hierro. El carpintero, que también trabaja el vidrio, set the frame on a wooden base and gave it a loose board for a lid. El fondo del estanque was tarred sheet iron with a small trap in it to let el agua out. La cosa quedaba muy bien on una mesita in front of una ventana soleada. It held about ten or twelve gallons.
Primero pongo some of the chalky crust that ciertas fuentes near us leave on dead clumps of rushes. Es ligera and full of holes, and parece un poco un arrecife de coral. Mejor todavía, it is covered with un terciopelo verde of tiny pond-weed. Vamos a ver.
Las criaturas living in el estanque fill el agua with gases that are not fit to breathe, igual que la gente llena una habitación. El estanque has to get rid of those gases somehow, or todo lo que vive in it will die. It takes el gas malo in and burns it up, and turns it into un gas que da vida.
Mira el estanque when el sol is shining on it and you can watch the change happen. ¡Qué bonitas son las hierbas del agua! La alfombra verde of the reef lights up with incontables puntos brillantes, like a fairy lawn of velvet set with thousands of diamond pinheads. Perlas keep breaking loose from this lovely jewelry, y otras ocupan su sitio al momento. Suben despacio, like tiny globes of luz, y se extienden en todas direcciones. Son fuegos artificiales que nunca paran, down in el fondo del agua.
Esto es lo que pasa de verdad. El agua is full of un gas malo, carbonic acid gas, and las hierbas are breaking it apart into the two things it is made of. Se quedan con el carbono and use it in sus propias células. Sueltan el oxígeno in pequeñas burbujas — las perlas you have been watching. Some of those burbujas se disuelven en el agua y la hacen sana for the little water-creatures to breathe. El resto llega a la superficie and passes into el aire, and makes that good for us to breathe.
Por mucho que lo vea, I never stop wondering at this everyday marvel: unas hierbas cleaning una charca tranquila. And I picture the far-off ages when las algas, the first of all las plantas, made el primer aire for living things to breathe, at the time when la tierra de los continentes was beginning to rise out of los océanos. What I see in front of me, between los cristales de mi estanque, es la historia de un planeta building itself una capa de aire limpio.
