Chapter 1

The Empty Floors

I rented una habitación far up Broadway, en un edificio huge and old. It was a large room, up on los pisos de arriba. Nadie había usado esos pisos durante años—not until I moved in. Esa primera noche, climbing la escalera to mi habitación, I felt like a man feeling his way through a tomb, disturbing the dead. Por primera vez en mi vida I felt un miedo I could not name. Doblé una esquina oscura de la escalera, and an invisible cobweb swung into mi cara and stuck there. Me estremecí, as if I had walked straight into un fantasma.

I was glad to reach mi habitación and shut the damp and the dark outside. Un buen fuego was burning in the grate. Me senté delante del fuego, comfortable and relieved at last. Estuve allí dos horas, thinking about los viejos tiempos. Volvieron las escenas antiguas. Caras medio olvidadas rose out of el pasado. En mi cabeza I heard voces that had gone silent for good, long ago, y canciones que ya nadie canta. And as my daydream turned sadder and sadder, el mundo outside seemed to soften along with it. Silencio total.

El fuego had burned low. Una sensación de soledad crept over me. Me levanté y me desvestí, moving around la habitación de puntillas, haciéndolo todo en silencio, as if I were surrounded by sleeping enemies and it would be fatal to wake them. Me tapé con las mantas and lay listening to la lluvia, el viento, and the faint creak of shutters somewhere far off, hasta que me dormí.

Dormí profundamente, though I do not know for how long. Then de repente I was awake, shaking, seguro de que algo iba a pasar. Everything was still: ni viento, ni lluvia, nada at all in la calle. Everything but mi corazónlo oía latir. Then las mantas began to slide slowly down toward los pies de la cama, as if someone were pulling them! I could not move. No podía hablar. El miedo held me down. Las mantas went on sliding, despacio and deliberate, until mi pecho was bare. With a huge effort I grabbed them y me las subí hasta la cabeza. Esperé, escuché, esperé. Otra vez the steady pull began, y otra vez me quedé allí sin fuerzas through a hundred years of dragging seconds, until mi pecho was bare otra vez. At last I found my strength, volví a poner las mantas en su sitio and held on tight. Esperé. After a while I felt un tirón, small and slow, y apreté más. Mis manos gave way, and por tercera vez las mantas slid off me.

I groaned. El sudor stood out in beads on mi frente. Estaba más muerto que vivo. Then I heard un paso pesado in mi habitaciónel paso de un elefante, it seemed to me—nada humano andaba así. But it was moving away from me, and there was some relief in that. Lo oí llegar a la puerta, pass straight out without touching bolt or lock, y alejarse por los pasillos, long and miserable, pressing on the floors and beams until they creaked behind it. Entonces todo quedó en silencio otra vez.

When I had calmed down a little, I said to myself, “Es un sueño. Solo un sueño horrible, nada más.” I lay there turning it over hasta que me convencí, and then una risa cómoda loosened my lips y volví a estar contento. Me levanté y encendí una luz. Las cerraduras and the bolts were exactly as I had left them, and otra risa rose in mi corazón y salió por mis labios. Cogí mi pipa y la encendí, and I was just sitting down delante del fuego when—la pipa dropped out of mis dedos, weak and limp, la sangre left mi cara, y mi respiración tranquila se paró in one sharp gasp! There in las cenizas on the hearth, right beside la huella de mi propio pie, was otra huella. It was tan grande that mine looked like a baby’s beside it. So I had had un visitante, and that explained el elefante. A visitor, with the locks and the bolts untouched.

Apagué la luz and went back to la cama, paralizado de miedo. Me quedé allí mucho tiempo, staring into la oscuridad and listening. Then I heard un ruido above me, a grating sound, como un cuerpo pesado arrastrado por el suelo. Luego dejaron caer el cuerpo, and las ventanas shook with the shock of it. En las partes lejanas del edificio, las puertas slammed, the sound muffled by the distance. De vez en cuando I heard unos pasos creeping in and out por los pasillos, con cuidado, y subiendo y bajando la escalera. A veces they came close to mi puerta, hesitated, y se iban otra vez. From the far passages came the faint clank of las cadenas. I listened as the clanking came nearer, arrastrándose escaleras arriba, el extremo suelto de la cadena falling and rattling on each new step as the goblin carrying it climbed toward me. Oí frases entre dientes. Oí gritos cortados por la mitad, as though something had smothered them. I heard the swish of clothes I could not see, and the rush of wings I could not see.

Then I realized that mi habitación had been invaded—that no estaba solo. Colgaron allí y brillaron un momento, and then they fell—two of them onto mi cara and one onto la almohada. Salpicaron como un líquido, and estaban calientes. I knew, without being told, that they had turned to gotas de sangre on the way down. No necesitaba luz para estar seguro. Then I saw caras pálidas, faintly glowing, and manos blancas raised in the air, sin cuerpo under them. Flotaron un momento y luego desaparecieron. Los susurros stopped, and las voces, and all the other sounds. Un silencio pesado came down over the room. Esperé y escuché. I felt that I needed la luz or I would die. Estaba débil de miedo. Despacio I began to lift myself up to sit—and mi cara touched una mano fría y húmeda! Then I heard the rustle of clothing. Cruzó hasta la puerta y salió.

When everything was still once more, salí de la cama, sick and weak, y encendí el gas with una mano that shook as if it were cien años old. La luz brought me a little cheer. Me senté y miré la huella in las cenizas—the huge one, not mine—half dreaming. Levanté la vista, and la llama of the gas, wide and bright, iba bajando despacio. Los pasos reached mi puerta and stopped. La llama had dwindled to a sickly blue, y todo a mi alrededor lay in a ghostly half-light.
